“a little discipline to safeguard love.” –St. Benedict. In The Spacious Path by Tamara Hill Murphy, we’re asked to not think about what are the rules that must be followed, but rather, how will I, with intention, abide in the spaces of my life? How will I fill out the spaces of my life? What will I put in and what will I remove?
"repeated architectural pattern." I love that. I read this just as I was about to start reviewing some notes that I've been making, and if I think about where the notes are heading, it would be something like a rule of life (with a lot of details about writing). This is a helpful phrase for the whole.
Nancy, I came back to this post to reflect again on my own personal mission statement, AKA Rule of Life. Saint Benedict, Tamara Hill Murray and you have given me a good framework from which to start. I love your wise words.
I'm intrigued by "The Spacious Path" from your review, so I've ordered it to read. When I was in Spain a few years ago, outside the El Salvador Cathedral in Oviedo, there were many nooks and small platforms that looked like they were missing statues. It was explained that no, indeed, we were to fill up these spaces and places with the works of our lives and so make it a living cathedral. I was reminded of this by your question, "How will I fill out the spaces of my life?"

Isn’t it wonderful how a new book can enlighten us, revealing deeper insights? Thank you for introducing me to the rule of life!
